Pally and cavalier mounts

Postby Thanos » Sun Jan 03, 2010 12:14 pm

Triceratops? T-rex? Roc? FTW?

This is a huge ruling

The class description says the mount is "usually" a heavy horse or pony. But then it goes on to say that the mount functions as a druid animal companion using the Paladin's level as the effective druid level. This immediately gives you access to a companion from that list.

For the sake of riding, however, I'd say that to be a "suitable mount for riding" (as loosely defined in the Ride skill) the mount generally has to be a quadruped one size category or more larger than your character. It would be pretty silly if your medium-sized human paladin rode a medium-sized boar, for example. :-)

Ahhhh....but how would this work for a dwarf? I have a player (in my PFS game) who is a dwarven ranger who wants a boar for his animal companion and mount. I'm not sure how this would work.

Any thoughts or ideas?

He takes a -5 on all Ride checks since a boar isn't a suitable mount for a dwarf (it's the same size category).

This is an interesting surmise that you have found here. I am thinking of making my third character a Paladin with a mount, particularly, a big cat. I couldn't ride it till seventh level so, I will have to be riding something else till then.

Because of the armor check penalty to the ride skill I will have to be a dex Paly with a buckler so, I can cast spells. The armor will have to be light or medium with mithril coming down the line at mid levels like my duelist character.

Elvin Curve Blade for the win!! :D

and you can call him Adam, and he was once a prince, and since becoming a Defender of justice you could hold up your magic sword and say.... Well you can say anything you want...

In looking at it I wholeheartedly agree. They really depowered it or at least made it so that a person is
inclined go straight class with it. And they got rid of the oaths. Wow.

looks like a lot of people are ok with it.

I think the problem with the class it is too mount focused. Unless you make a small Cavalier you are going to have some problems in close quarters which is the majority of pc adventuring. Not exactly a good choice for the standard adventuring party.

I'm dumping the cavalier aspect of my fighter and going with a more "angry" tone. Hell, she already plays like
a true fury so why not embrace it? ;)

Anger is not always your enemy. Sometimes it's your friend.

One would assume this would be the same for Nature Oracle mount?

I would say so

Anything that refers to a druids animal companion gets it.

This is no longer valid for cavaliers......
"A Medium cavalier can select a camel or a horse. A Small cavalier can select a pony or wolf, but can also
select a boar or a dog if he is at least 4th level. The GM might approve other animals as suitable mounts."

Not to mention that his challenge got gutted...
"Once per day, a cavalier can challenge a foe to combat. As a swift action, the cavalier chooses one target within sight to challenge. The cavalier’s melee attacks deal extra damage whenever the attacks are made
against the target of his challenge. This extra damage is equal to the cavalier’s level. The cavalier can use this ability once per day at 1st level, plus one additional time per day for every three levels beyond 1st, to a maximum of seven times per day at 19th level.

Challenging a foe requires much of the cavalier’s concentration. The cavalier takes a –2 penalty to his
Armor Class, except against attacks made by the target of his challenge.

The challenge remains in effect until the target is dead or unconscious or until the combat ends. Each cavalier’s challenge also includes another effect which is listed in the section describing the cavalier’s order."

That was a pathfinder society ruling. Joshua J. Frost is basically the GM and approved all Druid companions so until he changes his ruling I say it is still in effect.

The GM might approve other animals as suitable mounts.

My fighter is perfectly happy to take barbarian levels. She is pretty pissed off at the world already. ;)

Sorry as per the "Advanced Player's Guide Final Class Playtest", you would have to get a similar ruling made on the thread created for the revisions to the class which were in folder called “Final Playtest.” Any comments and feedback concerning these revised classes should be placed in this new forum.

Besides I'm taking about the Cavalier, Not the Paladin...
