Hey Peter, can we get together a group of us that are interested in Dragon Star for character creation? Possibly somewhere that we can eat at? Maybe like a Denny's or a Starbucks? A bookstore? We can meet after Sunshine this weekend. I think that would be loads of fun.

Not a bad idea, I will contact fito (who owns all the books) and see if he is up for it... its not to hard at all, LDS is still 3.0 so keep that in mind and bring your 3.0 PHB

Maybe after, the the large group would also be interested in watching Dawn of the Dead?

Umm.. maybe?

My wife is out of town for a week and 3 days while she is in England with her mother and her brother on some family business so I am all by myself for a whole week and a half. We can plan WiPoU4 as well during the upcoming week (considering I will be organizing it and putting the money down, I would like to hear from those who have ran it in the past to see what they are looking for in WiPoU).

Ok you scare me... why didint you go with them??? I miss london every day

This is something I picked up on the net... before you play LDS please read this.. Specialy you fito, this is the guide I was tellin you about last night.

P.S. Conversion to 3.5 will take place before Origins..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Point and Click:
New Wave D20 Combat in Dragonstar
“Now everyone has a Wand of Magic Missiles”
When I saw my first Orc with an autopistol it seemed like I was heading into a game of Warhammer 40k or maybe David Lynch’s Wuthering Heights. When he died after a particularly low roll from my Blaster I figured just like old times. Most of them were like this until they started shooting back. Ouch. It was quite an experience to be on the receiving end of that kind of firepower that had not been dealt out by a Wizard’s Spell or a Dragon’s breath.
Dragonstar is a different dynamic. It’s a different kind of combat and a different chessboard upon which the game is played. To survive, prosper, and above all have fun we as players are going to have to try something different. Combat is going to evolve from Lord of the Rings to scenes they would have cut from Saving Private Ryan for being too violent. It’s a point and click first person shooter world so you better be prepared.
Now this is not to say the campaign will devolve into mindless Point and Click (instead of hack and slash) because Magic is still real and the Gods’ favor still smiles upon the faithful and faithful alike. Your tactics though, have to change.
1.0 Everyone must carry a gun!
If your whole party is going native, then I doubt your survivability as a group in the environment of Dragonstar. Firepower is going to be very important and bows and crossbows just do not deal enough per hit damage to be effective against enemies who are no doubt going to be better armed. This will be especially true at higher APL’s once the higher levels get into the act. Everyone in the group (with the exception of Barbarians for whom it may not be an option) should have at least one small firearm or energy weapon. Even if its just to hand it over to the high dexterity rogue to keep firing. It also makes the “weak” classes, i.e. Wizard and Sorcerer and Bard, much more deadly at low levels.
Stat Monky Note: Everyone should also carry a melee weapon, LDS has guns, but you will end up in melee sooner or later.. carry a melee weapon... I sudjest a Charge Mace.. and use it two handed.
2.0 Dexterity over Strength
Do not take this as the death of the strong fighter. That would be an oversimplification of the issue. However, armor classes are already shooting through the roof at the low levels and when you have to wear down the opposition who is sitting behind the Shield spell, heavy clothes and Half-Cover your going to need a good dexterity bonus to your missile skill. Those who insist or who want to stay in Melee mode, which is viable if you yourself have a good armor class, will still need that high strength. Those armor classes are not just good against missile fire you know.
3.5 Stat Monkey Note: With the 3.5 conversion a melee fighter in LDS will be on even footing with gun bunnys.... BUT its better to be good at two styles of combat then one..
3.0 Stick and Move
Unless you have good cover you’re not going to be able to just stand and shoot like before. Take just one shot per round and move your 30 or 20 feet to get behind different cover. Also make the opposition come to you. Do not be afraid to “waste” the first round getting into solid position and use a reaction type of action for when the enemy comes into view. Remember, getting first move is not important; getting first shot is…
Stat Monkey Note: Amen! Cover is your friend!
4.0 Be Fast!
When getting that high armor class, try not to get it through being weighed down. It is more important then ever to exploit all the available avenues of getting a higher armor class. Cover is the most obvious but do not surprised if the Module writers start to give you less and less cover to work with. Again magic can come to the rescue but don’t forget not every spell can stack with armor and other bonuses so be very careful not to waste them.
Along with this, use the leap frog tactic, one person fires and one person runs then they switch and work their way towards the target. Speed can be your friend. A Meta-Game thought might be to take a level of Barbarian or Monk to get that extra 10’ of movement. This may seem to make smaller races unplayable but remember they get the size modifier to armor class so its not so bad.
Being fast is especially important for those who insist on being Melee fighters. Getting to the guy with the Railgun Carbine quickly will allow you to show off those archaic but still useful Melee skills.
Stat Monkey Note: You can live with Med Armor.. my Mechanist/Cleric will have Combat Armor on for a 22 AC (thats w/o a shield) Take a good look at the armor in Dragonstar, shields are worthless.. trust me.. your shield will be dust after the 1st fight.. now a ring of force shield... yummmmm
5.0 Be Versatile!
What is wrong with a Cleric knowing how pilot a starship? Absolutely nothing. Dragonstar opens up a whole slew of new skills and occupations and knowing these can make your party much more survivable. Spread computer knowledge and other special abilities around. This is especially true for Rogue’s who need to be smart and better Jack-of-all-Trades then they were previously.
Also, do not forget the Wilderness Lore Skill for those times when you’re dumped on an Outlands world. The basic Arcane and (especially) Dragon Knowledge skills will no doubt still be very useful. Don’t forget languages!
Stat Monkey Note: This is a very very useful peace of advice, I plan on two levels of Mechanist and the rest cleric.. why? skills! and some damn cool abilities that help the rest of the party.. Humm need a blaster made mastercraft, give me a game.. got to pilot a speeder.. I can, need to fix this or that? move over...
Muti-classing for SKILLS is the way to go in LDS.... look for Rouge or Mechanist combos.. in 3.5 Ranger combo's will work just as well.
Dragonstar is the s@#t :D
Fiona and I would be up for that, one Gnome Ranger Level 2 and one Pershala Pilot Level 1.
To comment on Peewee, The Stat Monkey God, quoting the New Wave Combat thing, an example: Drow annoy me. Drow exploding into a red mist after one shot with my Blaster Carbine, me likey. :|]
Give us a shout if you're going to run some LDS, I'm certainly up for it. Have most of the books already and all, especially being a long time Fantasy Flight fan!... Go buy some Blue Planet while you shop their site!
Price of Betrayal
Postby The Heretic » Mon Mar 22, 2004 12:30 am
I just wrote this e-mail to one of the co-ordinators of LDS.
Stephen,
What is this. This is possibly the worst ....no, not possibly. It is empirically the worst piece of drek ever written. I am only thankful. That this was not my first exposure to LDS. I am hoping my friend Max is willing to take my word that the rest of them are far far far far better. I am going to the RPGA site to see if this guy (John Cazares)has written anything else. I will under no circumstance play ANYTHING HE HAS WRITTEN and that includes PRICE OF BETRAYAL. Stephen, please dont let this guy write again for LDS. I implore you. I played this mod with someone who is involved with LA. I dont think John will be writing for them ever.
Sincerely
AJ Herrera
Guys, great game setting. Well written mods, but avoid, War Within, and Price of Betrayal. They are drek. This writer leads you buy the nose and even tells you the action you are taking:
:SPOILER: At one time he says you throw the explosives at some earth elementals in a completely irrational fashion. I mean no choice, no options , you do this and thats all. Oh by the way, you have to go up against large contingents of drow AND half dragons, but you cant be more than 3d level. :SPOILER:
