Promoting Local South Florida Events

Postby Highmoon » Fri May 08, 2009 12:38 pm

Recently I was involved in a project to help connect the gaming population in Puerto Rico. PR gamers suffer from isolation, where groups exist but they rarely interact with each other, so we created a central website meant simply to promote events all around the island, be they at stores or independent, without favoring any group/entity above another.

I get the feeling something like that would work in South Florida. I have to hit like four or five different places to know what's going on in gaming down here, so a central *and neutral* place that simply collected that info and sent it out would be a great resource for people like me.

I've no desire to create yet another community or to supplant those that exist, but rather funnel information from all those communities to a nexus that actually links back to them for information and promotion.

Do you have any thoughts on an idea such as this? Can you see any pitfalls out of the gate? Do you have any suggestions for features?

Help me hash this out to see if it would be a project worth doing. Thanks.

If you can find an easy to use calendar of events software based on php.
I can setup a website.

we could probably have that up and running in a month or two.

Maybe we could do a drupal website that all it does is list events with a calendar and nothing else.

The one I did for PR is WordPress-based with syndicated feed capabilities (to bring in RSS feeds from stores and/or game groups, if any) and a plugin-based forum. I'm searching for a calendar plugin, and have found one that links up to a Google Calendar and another that is an Events Manager; I'm trying them both to see which would work best.

This solution is simple and not complicated for anyone, which is why I liked it.
